The 2024 T. Baswell Donaldson Research Competition is Announced

The Central Bank of the Bahamas is pleased to announce the launch of the 2024 T. Baswell Donaldson Research Competition and Prize, which is being co-branded as the Bank’s 50th Anniversary Research Competition.

The T. Baswell Donaldson Research Prize continues the legacy of the Central Bank of The Bahamas’ first Governor, in striving to identify and inspire young scholars destined to stand out in their future contributions to Bahamian scholarship and national development, in the areas of economics, finance and business. The Prize, in the tradition established by Mr. Donaldson, also recognizes the value of higher education and technical skills in supporting capacity development and progress among both regulators and private sector firms in the domestic economy. Through the Central Bank, Mr. Donaldson was instrumental in establishing the Bahamas Institute of Bankers (now the Bahamas Institute for Financial Services), and contributed as a past Chairman of the College of The Bahamas (now the University of The Bahamas); both important capacity development institutions inside the country.

The competition will have elevated significance during the observation of the 50th Anniversary of the Central Bank. The finalists will be afforded the opportunity to participate in a research seminar sponsored by the Bank, aimed at refining their entries. From this selected group, the Research Prize will be awarded, along with second place and honourable mentions. In this regard, the cash value of prizes will be increased, with the first place researcher awarded $30,000, the second place submission receiving $10,000 and two honourable mentions receiving $5,000 each.

Students are invited to submit a completed, unpublished research paper on a policy or applied or theoretical treatment of a topic in business, economics or finance in the Bahamian context. The submission must be of an academic quality and adhere to academic standards of formatting and presentation. Judging of submissions will be done by an independent panel of educational and professional experts.

The deadline for submissions is 30th April 2024.

Completed papers should be uploaded to the competition website https://centralbankbahamas.submittable.com/submit, and should conform to the rules for submission also available on the site. Information may also be obtained by contacting the Central Bank’s External Relations Unit at [email protected]. Submissions received after the deadline will not be considered.
